Subject: Renault 8 Gordini Thu 18 Jan 2024, 8:05 am
I've already posted a pic of it on another thread. Today, my connexion is good enough to allow me to upload pics, so here's a bit more info...
The first addon car for GTL, in 2006, was a Renault 8 Gordini. The physics and performance were unrealistic but the low-poly 3D body was way better looking than what we have in the more recent R8G mods.
I wanted to convert the version from Gran Turismo 6/7 but the converted to .Obj model was on Gamemodels and is not available anymore, or the one from Forza Horizon 5 but I can't seem to be able to open the .carbin files...
So, I'm using as a base the best looking model available, one made for Rfactor by F1Ligue. There has been several versions, I'm using the first one, it's more detailed and better looking than the following versions.
Still, if the car looks more like a R8 than the other 3D models available, if you put it side by side with photos of the real car it's easy to spot the many inaccuracies.
So I've begun to rework the model, little by little, part by part. I've almost finished the body, only the bonnet and trunk remain. It will more or less take a week for each, I'm no 3D expert, I do it in 3DSimed, triangle after triangle. The new body will be more accurate, of course, but also lighter and more detailed, I'm eliminating a lot of unnecessary faces or merge several into a bigger one.
Of course, after that, all the other parts will have to be reworked or redone to fit with the new body...
So, here's how it looks so far :

The 3D model looks a lot like the one from BLT. I've installed it and removed it, it's difficult for me to feel any immersion with a car that looks so remotely like the real one. I think those who modeled the car have certainly never seen the car in real life. As I said in the first post, the best looking model we have so far remains the car made by Franckf55 in 2006. It's very low poly but it looks more like a R8 than any other released since...

Permit me, Ducon, to totally desagree with you, because this Speedster63 Mod shows exactly the real car I had one day in the remote past in my real garage. It's not polite you say critics words to other modders who spent so many hours working for free to our pure enjoyment. So, let's see your PERFECT job done, for me to feel totally and real immersion as you said above. For sure even Marco (Speedster) as well BLT guys will feel your "so kind" words about their job. Our friendly and amazing community does not need guys like you, so arrogant and unpolite.

Why do I feel this comment will start a useless shitstorm? Do we need it? Is it forbidden to say that a 3d model is better than another? Jumping on this thread to stop someone doing his version of another car is ok? The unpolite comment is another.

Omg, again..
If the speedster63 or the Diabo Loiro is going to be offended, and they shouldn't be.
There is a "mania" to defend the honor of others that is quite questionable. I even understand a brother, a son, etc. taking the pain and feel wronged, but the others?

The BLT/Speedster63 model is the one at the bottom. No other comment needed.

The 1st stage of body rework is completed and taken to the track to see how it looks like.
Still a lot of work to do. If you compare the profiles of the cars on the pic above, the lower body is too high, the upper part too low, the A-pillar needs to be more upright, the B-pillar moved forward, the C-pillar looks too long, the top of doors, the wheel arches and the bottom of the wings/fenders have to be modified, etc. but the car already looks better than what it was.

The original was 3.67 MB and now it's down to 2.73 while being more detailed. I'll make a bit less detailed version, without the holes on the bonnet and boot and other fantasies, so that should remove one more MB, and I'll make lods also to make the car playable on older PCs. So a lot of work in perspective...

Here's how it looks so far :
A real R8G :
The reworked 3D model :
Superposed :
The 3D model is in pink to show the differences. It still needs a bit of work on the top of windshield, rear window, b-pillar and the bottom and rear of the rear wings. The rest will remain as it is. There's not a single polygon that has remained in its original size or position but when comparing to the original AC model, it's hard to notice any difference...
Original AC car :

Body shell finished at last. The original model was looking good but actually needed to be reworked completely. It took a lot of time, especially for the smoothing that is really complicated to achieve when you don't really know how to do it. Well, it's far from perfect but it's the best I can do...
The new body has slimmed from 3.67MB to 2.17, the simplified version with no holes on the hood and trunk is 1.46. I will now work on the lods.
Body is remapped, I've understood how to do it in a less amateurish way . Here's how it looks now :
I think it will take some time before the car is finished.

There will be a template of course, but don't expect it until the car is a lot more nearer completion, it would be stupid to release a template that would become useless because of last moment modifications...

I say that because it already happened. I painfully made all the skins for the Mercedes 6.3 and wondered why they were so difficult to do. Then I finally realized that the B-pillar was not at the right place so that the front doors were too long and the rear doors too short. So, of course, after modifying the 3D model, all my skins were good for the trashcan...

The body is finished, but, there's always a but, you never know what might happen with the "everything else". Even some small details may lead to modify the main body texture. I also experienced that when I did the SM, twice, just before completion. Some details that I didn't notice before but that you couldn't unsee once you've seen them. Fortunately, I didn't have to redo the 129 body textures, but to rework them all, and twice, and it was certainly the most boring part when making the car.

Lods done.
From left to right, the most detailed to the least detailed. Sizes are 2.17MB, 1.46, 0.96, 0.33 and 0.15.
And, now, all the rest to do...

Little update.
What's done for the moment : body, chassis, engine, exhaust, windows and window frames with the five lods.
Lod A looks like this :
I'm doing almost everything from scratch, or reworking a lot the 3D from the original model. I also borrow some parts from a well done Dacia 1100 from GTASA done (or converted) by Cristian Burac.
Chassis two months ago :
Chassis now, mapped and textured (right-click on pic and choose open image in a new tab to see full-size):
All these represent the highest quality lod A.
At the other end, this is how lod E looks :
By the way, the last picture shows that the darker rear absorber has reverted faces, don't know how it could have happened...
The total size of body, chassis, engine, exhaust, windows and window frames, from lod A to lod E, in MB :
5.36 - 2.99 - 1.72 - 0.65 - 0.38
I will release different cas files that will use lods A to E, B to E and C to E so that the car can be played with older PCs.
As I said on a previous post, it will take some time. All the exterior accessories are to be done, all the interior and the cockpit. I'm also thinking of doing the earlier 1100 version that has a lot of differences from the 1300. I think it shouldn't be released before 2025 if all goes well... Be patient
